Compass Academy’s Continuum of Services for Gifted and Talented
Identification Process:
The Board recognizes the responsibility to identify gifted and talented students and offer appropriate educational programs. A gifted student is defined as someone who demonstrates high ability in one or more content areas compared to their peers and requires educational modifications. Identification uses multiple measures, including achievement test scores, grades, student performance, intelligence testing, and recommendations (from teachers, parents, or students). The identification process is ongoing, from kindergarten through grade five, and will be reviewed annually.
Curricular and Instructional Modifications:
The Principal or designee will develop appropriate curricular adaptations, considering content, process, products, and learning environments. These modifications are designed to challenge students in specific areas of ability without replacing the standard instructional program.
Program Options:
- Programs for gifted students may include various approaches such as:
- Pull-out programs (specialized classes)
- Classroom differentiated instruction (tailored teaching methods)
- Acceleration (moving through curriculum at a faster pace)
- Flexible pacing (allowing students to advance as they master content)
- Compacted curricula (condensing learning to focus on essential content)
- Distance learning (online or remote learning options)
- Advanced classes (higher-level courses)
- Individualized programs (personalized learning plans infused into regular instruction, with a written description filed in the student’s record)
Program Evaluation:
Programs for gifted and talented students will be periodically evaluated to ensure they remain effective and adjusted as necessary. This framework aligns with national standards and aims to encourage and challenge gifted students while maintaining the integrity of the broader educational program.
